“Grief is like the ocean”, according to author Vicki Harrison. “It comes on waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.” As we navigate these waters in the weeks ahead, we can focus on the beautiful memories that we have with Jordan to help ease our loss. She was our daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, teammate, classmate and Mahalo’s favorite. She has touched us all in different ways. Jordan was an avid soccer and softball player, a tech guru, an animal lover and so much more. My favorite memories of Jordan stem from summertime fun in Southampton. Long walks on the beach collecting shells ...playing and running around the beach club with her cousins for hours...tubing adventures...eating breakfast at the beach...watching Fourth of July parades...barbecuing with friends...attending concerts in the park. My mom once posted an adorable video on Facebook of four-year-old Jordan dancing to the beat of a Calypso band that was performing at Agawam Park. Jordan was smiling proudly and swaying like a pro. In recent summers, the cousin crew was busy with work and sports, but when our families got together, Jordan and her cousins enjoyed sitting around the fire pit, making s’mores and talking late into the night, probably complaining about the old folks inside the house. I thought about these times during the past few days. When we feel overwhelmed, share your Jordan moments with others to find tranquility. Relive her spirit in your mind. Keep close
to your heart the words of an old Irish Saying, “Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, Unheard, But Always Near, Still Loved, Still Missed and Very Dear.”

In Memory of Jordan Li Kenna
British author Brené Brown once said that “compassion is not a virtue- it is a commitment. It’s not something we have or don't have- it’s something we choose to practice.” Jordan practiced compassion everyday of her life. On top of this, she was a very caring person who loved her family and was someone who I knew I could trust with any problem I faced. She also displayed a tremendous level of commitment to her softball team and always spoke to me about how proud she was of her teammates.
The earliest memory I have of Jordan was a summer day 13 years ago. The two of us were in the sun room of our grandmother's house which overlooked the Shinnecock Bay and was a very special place for our family. In this room we were attempting to build a lego house. We built and built for hours but it always ended the same. A pile of bricks on the floor that our parents would inevitably step on. However we learned a valuable lesson that day- that everything needs a strong foundation- even a small house made from plastic.
Throughout the years the two of us made more memories together. During the summers we would have fun everywhere. At the beach club, at home, and in the pool. We would chase each other around with nerf-guns and which would annoy my Mom and Uncle Frank with the incessant clicking noises the toys produced. Jordan and I would take nightly walks on the bench looking for hermit crabs to catch. Both of us would swim in and sail in the Peconic and Shinnecock Bays; and after that we would hop in the pool and swim until dawn, telling each other all about our days.
And when the weather turned cold, we would take our adventures inside creating more memories. A few winters ago in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at our Aunt Meg and Uncle Bob's house we were in the basement when the “older cousins,” or our term for Joseph, Erin and Connor came down to join us and the five of us began to play round robin ping pong. I remember her face as she eagerly hit the ball back to whoever her opponent was- ecstatic joy. She carried this joy throughout the day. Because after we finished ping pong and everyone went upstairs we played darts, and it did not go well, at all. We never told anyone this but we were so bad at this game that it ended with numerous dents in the wall. I, being the goody two shoes I used to be, was mortified at what we had done. Jordan wasn’t. And her smile and carefree attitude assured me that we were fine. As she did so many times before. That night I recall her teaching my sister Amelia and our younger cousin Piper how to build all these awesome things in Minecraft. Being taught by their older cousin meant the world to the two nine year olds. This is just a glimpse of the happy aurora radiated from Jordan.
I know that right now each and everyone of us feels like there is a gaping hole in our hearts. The grief of losing a loved one is unnamable and unbearable. But our hearts will endure. Like the plastic lego house, our hearts need a strong foundation to stand and function. Because of her love, her compassion, and her joy; the foundation of our hearts is stronger than the hole. I know that when I go for my nightly walks in the summertime, the footprints in the sand will not just be my own, They'll be Jordans as well. I take comfort in knowing that Jordan is no longer suffering but instead is in a sandy eternity walking a beach of peace with her grandmother Winnie Chin and our grandmother Eileen Kenna.

Dear Jordan,
We love you and miss you. You were such a beautiful and smart girl. You were strong and tough as nails but when you smiled, your smile was so contagious and made everyone smile. Your laughter was even more contagious. We’re so proud to have known you and watch you grow since you were 5 years old in Girl Scouts Troop 4940. You loved learning and trying new things. We will always remember you coming to the Girl Scout meetings in your softball uniform, always ready for anything thrown your way. You are now an Angel in heaven.

Jordan was the most incredible, radiant and beautiful soul I have ever met. She was immensely genuine, funny, special, talented, kind and the epitome of all that’s good in the world. From endless trips to the city, shopping days at QCM, making amazing memories in disney, to just hanging out in her living room listening to her play guitar, spending time with Jordan was always incredible and I will always hold our memories in my heart. She always knew exactly what to say or do to make me feel loved and seen. She was one of my best friends, and her spirit will never ever be forgotten. I’m sending her family all of my love and prayers.
